What are Afternoon Prayers?

Afternoon prayers have a long and rich history stemming from Judaic and Islamic origins. However, Christians now use it too and afternoon prayers have also become contemporary prayers.

The early church used to pray the Lord’s prayer in the afternoons. Simply put, afternoon prayers are prayers we say in the afternoon. Setting aside a few minutes in the afternoon for meditation and rest can help bring peace to our lives and strengthen our prayer life.

It might seem silly to some to set aside a time for prayer but it can be a good practice. Setting aside time for prayer can help train our minds to actively seek the presence of God at different times of the day.

With everything that is going on in our workplace or at home, it can be easy to forget or run out of time to pray but when we make it a habit, it will become a natural part of our days.

It is never a disadvantage to seek God and His words at any time of the day. Communing with God throughout our day can bring wisdom, peace, and hope in our journey called life.

Powerful Afternoon Prayers

Monday blessings afternoon prayer

Romans 8:28

“We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.”

Lord God,

At times, I feel disconnected from everything, even you. It seems as if everything is muffled especially during these hours when my mind and body deserve rest but rest is the last thing on my list of priorities.

I know that you are always looking out for me and that you have a grand plan but it can be so easy to forget amid mind-numbing day-to-day activities. Because of that, I commit myself to this daily prayer where I seek the guidance and inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

I pray to you, oh Lord, to always remind me of your presence through your creation, the air I breathe, the people you put in my life, the water I drink, and the countless things and people you help me encounter every day to meet my needs. Please remind me of how connected I am to you and everything around me. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen, and Amen.

1 Chronicles 16:34

“O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.”

Dear Lord,

You are a strong tower all the righteous can go to and count on. The Bible verses teach us this fact, but our experiences confirm it in our lives. Thank you, Lord, for never letting me down and for all the joy and blessings. You are amazing and worthy of all praise and thanksgiving. You make me feel fully alive and strong. In your name, Amen and Amen.

Powerful midday prayers for guidance

Isaiah 58:11

“The Lord will guide you continually and satisfy your needs in parched places and make your bones strong, and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water whose waters never fail.”

Dear Father,

The morning has passed, and with it, my direction has left me. My soul is feeling lost at the moment. I offer this short prayer to ask for the Holy Spirit’s guidance at this moment. Give me grace and love today, Father. Direct me Lord, and teach me to obey. I also ask for forgiveness for all my sins. In Jesus’ name, I pray with all my trust, Amen.

Afternoon prayer for peace

Isaiah 26:3

“Those of steadfast mind you keep in peace, in peace because they trust in you.”

Lord God,

I know that you, my Lord, save, and I believe this with all my heart. Lord, I need you to save me from the chaos that is raging around me and in me. I love my friends and family, but I come to you in faith, trusting that only you will bring peace to my troubled heart.

I know that you can calm the storms with nothing more than words, but I also know that sometimes, what needs to be calmed is not the storm but your child. Please hear my plea and give me the peace that only You can give, oh Lord.

Please help me overcome my fear and receive your blessing and light. Lead me through the morning til night, and let me sing your glory and be glad in your truth. Teach me to pause and hear your voice, Lord. Let me be the victor and not the victim, Lord. I pray in the mighty name of Jesus, the Son of God. Amen.

Please help me remember that no trouble or shadow can take me from your love and grace. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, I pray, Amen.

As for me, I call to God, and the Lord saves me. Evening, morning, and noon I cry out in distress, and he hears my voice.

How Afternoon Prayers Can Change Your Day

I think we have all that day where everything that can go wrong has gone wrong, where frustration feels overwhelming, and we are just a second away from tears or an outburst.

Wouldn’t going to God for comfort or just to talk to Him about everything that is going on be the perfect remedy for this kind of day? Or perhaps we can ask God for inspiration when we are feeling lost and failing miserably at being productive. We can also give thanks for all the answered prayers and thy faithfulness to us.

We call our loved ones occasionally and it strengthens our bond and helps us stay updated on what’s going on in their lives. The same could be said with our afternoon prayers. We can have a completely normal day and just check in on God and it can help us stay connected to Him.

Afternoon Prayers

In Summary

Paul encourages us to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17) and it is good advice. We should always be connected to God no matter what is going on in our life or what we are feeling. God is always happy to hear from us because He loves us.
