21 Important Bible Verses About Light

Bible verses about light symbolize God, faith, and holiness throughout Scripture.

Jesus Christ is the Creator of life, and His life brings light to humankind. In His light, we see ourselves as we are (sinners in need of a Savior). When we follow Jesus, the true Light, we can avoid walking blindly and falling into sin. He lights the path ahead of us so we can see how to live. He removes the darkness of sin from our lives. In what ways have you allowed the light of Jesus to shine into your life?

Bible Verses About Light

What Are the Bible Verses About Light

Bible verses about light are used widely in the Bible. They are used to talk about God, Jesus, faith, the Word of God, and holiness. Bible verses about light are also used to pertain to believers. Let us look at some Bible verses that talk about light.

Psalm 119:105

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

God’s word is compared to light. It guides believers in the way that they should go. God’s word helps believers discern what God wants them to do.

John 8:12

“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life”.”

Jesus called Himself the light of the world. His examples and His teachings lit the way for a lot of people in His time. They saw the truth through the teachings of Jesus and have never been the same since. Thousands of years later, His words, teachings, and examples still light the way for us.

James 1:17

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”

God does not give anything that is not good. The most important thing is, that God and His love are never changing. He is the same today as He was in the beginning.

Ecclesiastes 2:13

“I saw that wisdom is better than folly, just as light is better than darkness.”

Wisdom is also compared to light in the Bible. It shows us the way and drives away the darkness of uncertainty and fear. It points us to the path that God wants us to take.

Psalm 119:130

“The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.”

Knowing and understanding the Word of God is key to the Christian life. Knowing what God wants, and knowing God Himself is enlightening. Once we find God through His word, our life changes forever.

What Does the Bible Say About Light?

As Christians, we experience two kinds of light. We can see physical light. The other kind of light, the more important light, is the light that comes from God. Let us see what His words say about this.

Does the Bible say anything about Jesus being the light of the world?

Jesus’ power to claim the title “light of the world” comes from three truths. (1)Jesus speaks from God. (2)Jesus speaks for God. (3)Jesus speaks as God. Everything that Jesus taught us is from God. Jesus has been God’s spokesperson while He was here on earth.

The most important truth is that Jesus speaks as God. Jesus is God. Jesus taught as God. Life can be amazing here on earth but without Jesus, there will always be darkness in our lives. Jesus died for us and saved us from our sin.

Through this, Jesus dispelled the darkness in our lives and He let the light in.

Why is God called light?

1 John 1:5 says that God is light. Note that the author did not say that God is like light, or that He is a kind of light. He is light. Being light driving away the darkness is a part of His nature. God is holy in His absolute sense. He cannot exist together with sin which is often described as darkness.

In plain words, God is perfect. He is unblemished, untarnished. It can prove too much for the human mind so God compared himself to light to help us understand His nature.

Is Jesus called the light of the world?

When we wear a white shirt and go hiking, there is a good chance that it would get dirty. Our clean shirt would look way lighter when it is clean compared to when it is filthy. When Jesus washed away our sins, when He died on the cross, He saved us from sin, from the darkness.

Like a filthy shirt, we have been washed. When we were living in sin, it is like we were trapped in a dark and cramped room. Jesus shone His light in that dark and cramped room and washed away the darkness.

He can do that to anyone who comes to Him. And if everyone comes to Him, His light in the world would drive out all of the darkness that is enveloping the world today.

Bible Verses About Light

Bible Verses about Light as Truth

Bible verses about light have been used to describe God. But it has also been used to describe the truth. Let’s see what the Bible says about light as a symbol of truth.

Ephesians 5:9

“(for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true)”

Sometimes when the light is off, it is so easy to mistake things for things that are not real. When our world is enveloped in darkness, the enemy has such an easy time tricking us. But with the light of truth, the enemy can never sway us with his lies and deception.

Job 12:22

“He reveals the deep things of darkness and brings utter darkness into the light.”

So many things can hide in the darkness. This is probably why so many people are afraid of the dark. However, once we find the light, we realize that there is nothing to be scared of.

Bible Verses about Light and Darkness

In so many cultures, there are stories of battles between light and darkness. What does the Bible say about this?

John 1:5

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

Darkness cannot overcome the light. Shadows disappear when light shines on them. Light is much more powerful than darkness. Whenever you are feeling overwhelmed by the darkness around you, turn to the light and watch the darkness flee from it.

2 Corinthians 4:6

“For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.”

The God who commanded light into being, the God who drove out the darkness and chaos before time began, is also the God who will command light into being in our hearts. No matter what kind of darkness we have in our hearts, may it be sin, guilt, or sadness, God has the power to drive it away.

Bible Verses about God as Light

1 John 1:5

“This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him, there is no darkness at all.”

There are no shadows anywhere near God. Light does not shine on Him. He is light and no darkness could ever overcome Him.

Psalm 139:12

“…even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.”

When we try to hide, we look for a dark spot and we think we hid quite well. But the thing is, like the psalmist said, nothing can hide us from God. Even darkness becomes light to Him because He is more powerful than any darkness.\

Bible Verses About Walking in the Light

1 John 1:7

“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.”

Walking in the light calls us to action. It is a lifestyle. Walking in the light brings us closer to one another and helps us develop a deeper and healthier relationship with God.

Ephesians 5:8

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.”

Before God, we have been so deep in darkness that we have embodied it. But with God’s help, we are now children of light. It is only right that we walk as children of light.

Bible Verses about Lighting the World as a Christian

Acts 26:18

“…to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.”

God did everything He could do for us. Jesus died for us. It is now our turn to bring light into the world, to pass everything we received from God.

Romans 13:12

“The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.”

We have been waiting for the Day of Judgment for a long time now. It has not come yet but it will come. We must be ready. Other than that, we can shine our light to lead others towards God and experience His love, forgiveness, and salvation.

Matthew 5:14

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.”

Light is meant to shine. A small light can feel daunted by all the darkness around it. But as light, we must remember that no matter how little our light is, it is from God; and no amount of darkness can defeat that.

Best Bible Verses to Memorize About Light

It is always good to be prepared. One of the things we can do to be prepared as Christians is to memorize verses that would help us in times of need. Here are some Bible verses about light that we can memorize to fight off the enemy.

Matthew 5:16

“In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”

Genesis 1:3

“Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.”

Colossians 1:13

“For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins.”

Proverbs 4:18

“The way of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, which shines ever brighter until the full light of day.”

Psalm 27:1

“The Lord is my light and my salvation—so why should I be afraid? The Lord is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble?”

How to be a Light of the World?

We can be a light of the world in so many ways. The Bible tells us that, whoever says they are in the light but do not love others, is lying to themselves. Christians are called the salt and light of the world.

Salt cannot serve its purpose unless it is absorbed. It speaks of the inward things Christians must focus on. Light, on the other hand, cannot help itself but manifest. This pertains to the fact that our beliefs should be seen. There must be evidence of our faith.

Jesus gave so much emphasis on loving our neighbors. He even told us to pray for those that persecute us. We can be the light of the world by telling people our testimonies of God’s goodness in our lives.

As these sources of light, being the light of the world is exhausting. It can burn us up quicker than we think. To avoid this, we must make sure that we are always connected to the real source of light: God.

We can make a habit of reading the Bible, praying, journaling, sharing testimonies, and connecting with other believers. This way, we can always keep our light burning. Our light comes from God. We reflect the bright and powerful light that God gives.

Bible Verses About Light

In Summary

Light is important. It is powerful and it can do a lot of good things for us. It can give us assurance, a sense of security, and certainty. We do not have to guess when there is light. We can appreciate the beauty of the world around us because of light.

This might be why light is used so often in the Bible. We have the power to bring so much goodness into the world. We are sent on an important mission. Also, we have the power to drive out falsehood.

We have the power to drive away from the fear that darkness brings into people’s lives. Aside from that, we can also make the sadness go away. We can put uncertainties to rest. God is light and He has shared with us a sliver of His nature so we can go out into the world and make a world of difference.
