19 Top Bible Verses About Perseverance and Hardwork

Bible verses about perseverance help us keep going and fighting by giving us the strength and hope from God.

Perseverance is one of those words that are easier said than done. Persevering all the time can get exhausting quickly. With all that we went through these past few years, it can be considered a miracle that we are still standing. How do we persevere in a world that seems to be getting worse and worse?

What are Bible Verses about Perseverance?

Today’s world often lacks hope and strength, but Christians have these in abundance because God is our source. Bible verses about perseverance are God’s words giving us encouragement, strength, hope, and faith whenever we feel like giving up.

The Bible tells us that God provides for our every need, including the strength to persevere. We must get familiar with Bible verses about perseverance because we do not know when hard times will come to us, and being prepared is crucial in facing trials and loss.

What Does the Bible Say About Perseverance?

Perseverance is defined as persisting in doing something despite difficulties or delays in succeeding. You keep going even when it is tiring and frustrating. The Bible encourages us to persevere and keep holding on to our faith. Many characters in the Bible experienced hardships and persevered because of God’s help. Here are some Bible characters who are well-known for their stories of perseverance.

Stories of Perseverance in the Bible

Job

Job is one of the Bible characters who knows intimately about loss because of all he went through. He lost his wealth, his children died, his health, and even his friends and wife when they gave up on him. Job had nothing but his life at that point, and after all that suffering, we would understand if Job gave up and got angry with God, but he did not.

Make no mistake, though; Job also asked God, “Why?” He wondered why all of that was happening to him when he had been faithful and obedient. Does that sound familiar? Is that something you have asked God in times when you have nothing but tears?

Job managed to hold on to his faith despite all this because he knew God. In the end, Job was rewarded twice for everything he once had. As he said in Job 23:10, “But he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold.” Job did come forth as gold without any impurities because he held on.

Jesus

Matthew 26:39 tells us how Jesus bowed His head to the ground in prayer because of what He knew was going to happen to Him. Have you ever prayed with your head to the ground? In some religions, that is customary, but it usually signifies exhaustion and desperation with most Christians.

We can pray so casually to God whenever we are and whatever we are doing because we believe that prayer is a lifestyle and not just a particular activity. So when we pray with our heads to the ground, it is most likely that we are hurting much. Jesus prayed just like that when He was to be crucified in a few hours.

Still, Jesus ended His prayer, saying that He wanted the Father’s will to happen instead of His because He trusts that the Father’s will is always the best course of action for everyone. Like Jesus, let us persevere and trust that God will never let us down.

Ana

For a long time, Ana prayed to God for a son. She prayed and waited for years, but God never gave her a child. She once prayed at the temple, and the priest Eli thought she was drunk because she was praying so fervently.

Upon learning her story, Eli told her to set her mind at peace because she would have a child. She gave birth to Samuel, and she dedicated him to God just as she promised. Her child grew up to be God’s messenger, anointing kings and leading Israel.

Nehemiah

Nehemiah lived in the days when foreign nations invaded Israel. They left Israel in ruins and defeated, and he was taken to live in foreign lands. God blessed him, and the king of Persia learned to trust him until he became the king’s cupbearer.

Nehemiah would often remember how the walls of Jerusalem lay in ruins. Ruined city walls back then meant that the people living in the city were vulnerable to attacks and plundering from anyone. It was also a testament to all their losses.

By God’s grace, the king allowed Nehemiah to go home and rebuild the walls of their city. It was not, by any means, an easy task. They had to rebuild their wall and fend off attacks from their enemies. The miracle is they finished rebuilding the wall within 52 days.

It might not seem impressive at first, but the wall they rebuilt was 2.4 miles long, 39 feet high, and 8.2 feet thick. Nehemiah and his men persevered, and they accomplished a feat that was so great.

The persistent widow

Jesus told a parable about a widow seeking justice for wrongdoing that her enemy has done to her. She would go to the judge every day and ask that she be given the justice she deserves. The judge did not fear God nor man, so he kept ignoring the woman.

But, the woman was very persistent and did not give the judge a break. Eventually, even if the judge feared no one, he relented and gave the widow what she desperately wanted. If the judge with that character gave the woman what she wanted because of her perseverance, imagine how much God would do even better and quicker for us if we persevered.

2 Thessalonians 3:13

Persevering develops us as people, shaping us and helping us be better than before.

Matthew 10:22

Psalm 71:5-6

And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer, and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him, he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

In Summary

Life will always find a way to knock us off our feet, but we have to get up, dust ourselves off, and keep going if we fall. We will fall and fail, but we must never give up.

Let us keep in mind that God called us and has confidence in us, our abilities, and our faith. God believes in us, so we should also believe in ourselves and persevere. We have the best backup in the whole world – God.
