11 Popular Bible Verses About Serving Others

The Christian life is a life of service, and these Bible verses about serving others will encourage and guide us on our way.

Service is a word that we often hear in our Christian circles. It is a big part of our Christian lives. One cannot be a Christian and not serve. When we accept God in our lives, we give up the right to be masters of our own lives, and we give our lives in service to Him.

But one must not be content with serving God alone. A Christian must serve others not as a servant to a master but as brothers and sisters, as one who loves each other. Our Christian life drives us to serve, and we will learn more through these Bible verses.

What are Bible Verses about Serving Others?

Our relationship with God is significant in our Christian life, and we pay a lot of attention to and make a lot of effort to nourish and nurture this relationship. This is an excellent thing to do, but sadly, many Christians stop here.

Our service should not just end with God. We must serve our brothers and sisters as well. Humbling ourselves to serve others makes our connection with them stronger, necessary in our Christian life.

Strengthening our relationship with others can help us strengthen our faith when we feel weak. Bible verses about serving others teach us, encourage us to serve each other, and teach us about the rewards and joys of doing so.

What Does the Bible Say About Serving Others?

One of my favorite biblical passages about service is found in 1 Peter 4:10-11 because, first, it acknowledges our unique gifts and, second, it reminds us of who we are doing it all for. Verse 10 tells us we did not receive uniform gifts from God as if they were mass-produced in some factory in heaven.

We all have our uniqueness, and so do our gifts, so there might be times when God is sending us specifically because our unique traits and gifts are perfect for the situation. We also know that serving others is not always a walk in the park.

There are times when it feels like cutting off our arms would be easier than serving our brothers and sisters, but verse 11 reminds us that we are doing this not just for them but also for God. Jesus has so many teachings about serving others because it is one of the central factors in His stay here.

Jesus washed His disciples’ feet, and this chore was reserved for slaves back then. No master would be expected to wash the feet of his peers, much less their servants or disciples, and yet Jesus did to teach us to serve each other.

The early church fathers continued this teaching and example in their ministries wherever they went. They served not just God but others because this is the Christian way. Today, we are expected to follow their examples and do the same.

Best Bible Verses About Serving Others

Bible verses about serving those in need

Acts 20:35

“In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work, we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

The ability to give is a privilege and a gift. First of all, God blessed us so generously that we have something to offer others. He then gave us the privilege of passing on these blessings to others. There is a certain satisfaction and happiness from giving, from knowing that we are doing God’s work in this world.

Matthew 5:42

“Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.”

God never turned away anyone who asked for help. He rescued the Israelites from captivity and saved them from conquerors repeatedly. Jesus healed anyone who came to Him and even gave enlightenment to a Pharisee named Nicodemus when he came to Jesus in search of answers. God wants us to live the same way.

Hebrews 13:16

“And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”

Following God does not end with serving Him. We must serve others to honor God. This is what He expects from us because this is the example Jesus set when He came to earth.

Bible verses about Jesus’ command to serve others

Matthew 5:16

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Our words and, more importantly, our actions introduce God to the world. This is why God always wants us to let our light shine, to show the world good works, which it desperately needs these days. We never know; maybe by doing a simple act of service to others, we lead them to Christ just like lighthouses lead ships home.

Mark 9:35

“Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.”

Jesus did not come to be served but instead to serve because, in His Kingdom, the one who leads is the one that serves, the strongest lifts others, and the most powerful empowers.

Matthew 10:8

“Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.”

Anything that God blessed us with is meant to be shared. Our material things are meant to be shared with those in need. Even our life is meant to be shared with our loved ones; our salvation is intended to be proclaimed and shared with others. We have received all of this from God. It is only fitting that we pass on these blessings to others by serving them.

Bible verses about the rewards of serving others

Matthew 25:40

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

When people thank us for something good we did, we usually respond with “It’s no big deal.” but the truth is, it is a big deal in heaven. Every single act of service we gave to our brothers and sisters, we gave to God and for that, we will be with Him in paradise.

Galatians 6:9

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time, we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

Sometimes, serving others can be hard work, especially if we do not get even a hint of gratitude. Still, we must never forget that we are doing this because of our love for God and our brothers and sisters, and when the time comes, we will get way more than gratitude for our reward.

Proverbs 11:25

“A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”

I once heard a preacher say, “Open hands receive more than closed fists.” When we readily serve others, we get more than we gave, and it opens up our lives to blessings we never expected.

Proverbs 19:17

“Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.”

It would do us well to remember that when we serve others, we serve God as well. And serving God is our purpose in this life so let us keep serving God while serving others and enjoy the rewards that come with it, for we know that God’s Word never fails.

In Summary

In a world that values pride and individuality above everything else, serving others might sometimes seem imperceivable. But we must never forget that we are not of this world. We are citizens of heaven, so it is only fitting that we do not do as the world does.

God commanded us to love and serve one another, and by doing so, we share the love, compassion, and humility of Christ. By living a life of service to God and others, we will discover the joy that this world is incapable of giving.
