13 Comforting Bible Verses for a Broken Heart

Our hearts are fragile and prone to breaking, so here are helpful Bible verses for a broken heart to give us comfort when our hearts need it.

I once read a story about a brokenhearted teenager crying to her mother. Someone broke her heart for the first time, and she asked her mother, “Why does it hurt so much? Why can’t God fix my heart?” to which her mother replied, “Honey, He will fix your heart, but you gotta give Him all the pieces.”

Our heart is precious, and when it gets broken, we tend to hold on to the pieces and try to fix it ourselves. But when you hold on to something broken, the tendency is for you to get even more hurt.

We have to give God all the pieces of our hearts; we have to surrender them to Him and trust that He can and will fix them because no one loves us more than God does, and He cannot stand seeing us suffering or hurting.

What are Bible Verses for a Broken Heart?

One of the best cures for a broken heart is comfort. We can find comfort in family, friends, and sometimes even random strangers. But, the best comfort we can hope for comes from God. The Bible is the voice of God, so we should listen to what the Bible says.

Bible verses for a broken heart are helpful if we want to know what to do if we want to hear the voice of God in times of pain, or if we want to be reminded of the love and promises that God gives us.

Biblical Characters Who Experienced a Broken Heart

We are not alone in our pain. People have broken their hearts for different reasons for thousands of years. Biblical characters are not exempted from this, just as we are not exempted from it. Here are some Bible characters that experienced a broken heart.

Job (Job 1-42)

Job had everything. He had a wonderful family he could provide for because he had an excellent livelihood. He had friends, and he was happy until it was all taken away from him.

Joseph the Dreamer (Genesis 37:2-40:23)

Our family should be the ones to protect us, so imagine what it was like for Joseph when his brothers sold him as a slave. They were full of envy because their father loved Joseph so much.

And then, he worked hard as a slave but then was falsely accused of something vile that he did not do, and because of it, he was thrown in prison. He experienced heartbreak after heartbreak, betrayal after betrayal.

Ruth and Naomi (Ruth 1)

Nothing breaks the heart like the death of a loved one. When Ruth and Naomi lost their husbands, they decided to go home to Naomi’s hometown, leaving their life behind and carrying their heartbreaks home.

Hannah (1 Samuel 1:2–2:21)

Hannah was barren, and she wanted a child so badly that she could not think of anything else but still, for many years, she remained childless, and it broke her heart. She cried out to God in prayer. She prayed so hard that Samuel thought she was drunk, but her heart was aching because her dream could not be given to her.

Mary and Martha (John 11:1-44)

It hurts to lose a loved one, but losing them while knowing that something could have been done hurts worse, and this is precisely what happened to Mary and Martha.

Peter (Luke 22:54-62)

Being betrayed by those we love hurts, but it also hurts when we are the ones that betrayed our loved ones. Peter vowed to die and kill for Jesus more than once, but he denied Jesus Christ at the most crucial moment.

Best Bible Verses for a Broken Heart

Bible Verses to Heal a broken heart

Psalm 34:18

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”

Psalm 34:18 promises that God does not leave us. He never lets us face our brokenness alone. Instead, He draws nearer to us and comforts us.

Psalm 147:3

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”

It is hard to take care of ourselves when we are hurting. More often than not, we would rather lie down in bed, rest, and shut down rather than tend to our injuries. We have nothing to worry about because God will do it for us, as Psalm 147:3 teaches us.

Psalm 73:26

“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”

Humans have a lot of weaknesses, and one of them is being prone to the pain of all kinds, even those that are of the heart, but the good news is the Lord is close to you, and you can cast your burden on Him anytime.

John 14:27

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

John 14:27 promises a rare commodity in the world today-peace. The Spirit of the Lord is always with us and will give us the peace of God despite our broken hearts.

Comforting Bible Verses for a broken heart

Psalm 55:22

“Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.”

Psalm 55:22 is a precious Bible verse encouraging you to surrender to God and let Him mend your broken heart and give you rest.

Isaiah 41:10

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Isaiah 41:10 is a powerful Bible verse reminding us how much God loves us. He will give us the strength to overcome whatever is causing us pain.

1 Thessalonians 5:18

“Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.”

I know that it is hard to be thankful when we have a broken heart, but sometimes the key to being happy is to look at what we have and not at what we don’t and find it in ourselves to be thankful.

Bible verses for the heartbroken

Revelation 21:4

“And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”

God created everything, and He has created a place for us where we would never cry or feel pain ever again.

Matthew 11:28-30

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

There are times when we see ourselves as crushed in spirit, but the good news is that we will always find rest, comfort, and relief in Christ Jesus.

John 3:16

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Jesus Christ loves us so much that He never wanted us to suffer but have a good and fulfilling life, and that is why He gave up His life for us. He will be very helpful in our healing if we seek Him.

Bible Verses to Comfort a Broken Heart in Times of Grief

Romans 8:28

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Things might be bleak and painful, but nothing lasts forever, including our pain. We must trust that God has a beautiful plan for us who trust and believe in Him.

Jeremiah 29:11

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Jeremiah 29:11 is a Bible verse that is very helpful in reminding us of the great future that is waiting for us once we get over our pain and broken heart.

John 16:33

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Sometimes, it might feel like having a broken heart is part of life here. Maybe there is some truth to this because there is a pain in love and hope, but we have to trust God because He overcame the world with all its pain, disappointment, betrayal, and death, and He will help us do the same.

In Summary

Whoever is weary and burdened should come to God. The Lord never turns anyone away. God heals the brokenhearted and saves the crushed because of His great love. God understands what we are going through, and He will never ridicule us for how we are feeling.

He will reach out to us and give us the healing we desire. Let us never forget that no matter how painful things are right now, it is not the end, and God, who created our hearts and their intricacies, can put a million broken pieces of our hearts back together and make them better and stronger than they were before.
