21 Comforting Bible Verses About Loneliness and Sadness

Bible verses about loneliness give hope and offer deep encouragement for our seasons of loneliness.

Being alone and being lonely are two very different things. One can enjoy a walk or a jog by themselves, but no one enjoys being lonely. Loneliness is the extreme feeling of isolation, of sadness. That emptiness that just refuses to go away, that weight that pushes you down, or that sudden gut punch out of nowhere, that is loneliness. We can be alone and be happy, and we can be surrounded by people and still feel lonely.

Why are Bible Verses about Loneliness Important?

Loneliness is real, and we are no strangers to it. Loneliness exists, and a lot of people suffer from it. God is not happy when we suffer. There are a lot of Bible verses about loneliness that can help us. They remind us of things we tend to forget, at times like how God is always present in our lives no matter what we are feeling.

It is important to read and meditate on Bible verses about loneliness because they remind us of God’s love. They remind us that God is always there for us and that we do not have to face anything by ourselves. We can have help and companionship. God’s Word has the power to drive our loneliness away. Let us give it a shot.

How to Deal with Loneliness According to the Bible

Seek God

Deuteronomy 31:6

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

The Lord will never turn His back on us. When we find ourselves feeling like there is nobody with us, we can always count on God to be there for us, to be on our side. It would help if we would count what we have rather than what we do not have. The good news is, that we will always have the Lord. Focus on Him and all the things He can give us.

Trust in God

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

The Lord never looks at us the way people do. He does not look at us with standards that the world applies. He looks at us with love. God’s love does not care about the things that humans do. He does not care how much we earn or how we feel sometimes. He does not care what we think about ourselves because He loves us no matter what.

Build relationships

1 Corinthians 12:26

“If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.”

The church is a single unit made up of different parts. Like the human body, the body of Christ is composed of different people. We are not alone in this journey, this fight. Sometimes, we just have to actively seek the connection we have with others to see it. We are all connected.

We are bound together by our faith and by God’s love for every one of us. The human body is amazing. We can make it through with each other’s help. And we are all connected so we are not alone even in our pain. We have others to support us, to bear the burden with us.

Best Bible Verses About Loneliness

Abandonment

Psalm 27:10

“For my father and my mother have forsaken me, but the Lord will take me in.”

People experience abandonment from other people. Sadly, some even experience it from the people who should be there for them. The good news is that, even if people can do it to us for unthinkable and unfathomable reasons, God’s love will always be there for us.

Psalm 139:7-10

“Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.”

God’s presence is everywhere. He knows us and He wants to always be close to us. He does not want us to be alone and to feel lonely, so we can always count on Him to be there for us no matter where we are in the world.

Psalm 139:7

“Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence?”

The whole chapter of Psalm 139 describes how precious we are to God. The Holy Spirit is always with us, teaching, guiding, and blessing us. This is the kind of love and grace we receive from the Lord.

Psalm 25:16

“Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted.”

The Lord knows what we are feeling and thinking all the time. He is the one we can turn to when we have no one to talk to. We can be honest and transparent with Him. And we can be vulnerable. We can be completely open to Him without the fear that He will leave.

Rejection

Isaiah 43:1-2

“But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.”

We experience a lot of different things in life. We go through ups and downs, but even in crazy, dangerous, and scary situations, the Lord is with us and we know that with Him, we are safe.

Romans 8:34-35

“Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?”

Jesus Christ loves us greatly and can keep us from feeling lonely and afflicted because nothing can beat His love for us.

Joshua 1:9

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Loneliness can weaken a person emotionally, physically, and mentally. But we can avoid this because the Lord is with us, and He gives us the strength and courage we need each day.

Psalm 147:3

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”

The Lord cares deeply for us and He will never leave us to fend for ourselves alone, especially when we are hurt. He gently scoops us up, binds up our wounds, and hugs us to make it all better.

Loss

Psalms 68:5-6

“Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation. God settles the solitary in a home; he leads out the prisoners to prosperity, but the rebellious dwell in a parched land.”

This psalm shows that God is faithful and caring to those that are feeling down. No one will feel alone in God’s presence because the love of God is uncontainable.

Philippians 4:19

“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

Sometimes, our needs are not material things. Sometimes we need connection with others. The Word of God assures us that He will provide us with everything we need.

Hebrews 13:5-6

“Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?”

Sometimes, loneliness comes from dissatisfaction or our inability to be content. Learn to put God first because He will never leave you nor forsake you.

Romans 8:38-39

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Nothing on this earth or even in heaven can erase God’s love for us. It is beyond logic, reason, and explanations. The Lord loves us so much that nothing we can do nor think to do can take His love away from us.

Big changes

Psalm 23:4

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

Other people may fail us but never God. Everyone might run away and abandon us, but the Lord will never do that. He will be with us and provide us with the strength to get through it even we are on the most dangerous and loneliest path.

Philippians 4:6-7

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:6-7 is both an instruction and a promise. I do not know what it is about people, but we seem to have a hard time laying down our burdens. The Lord is great and mighty, and He can carry all of our burdens. We do not have to be shy with God. We should surrender and turn over all our burdens to Him and enjoy the freedom it will bring.

Joshua 1:5-6

“No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you or forsake you. Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them.”

From the time of Moses and the other Fathers of the faith, God has been there for us. We have nothing to fear and we have no reason to feel lonely because God is our Father. He gave us life, and He will never forsake His own.

Isaiah 41:10

“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Like a parent encouraging a child to go down a slide, promising that they will be there all the way. The Lord promises us that He will be with us, no matter how scary or sad things might seem. Isaiah 41:10 tells us how important we are to God.

Matthew 28:18-20

“And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Jesus said this to His disciples when He sent them into the world to proclaim the Gospel. They faced so many challenges in their journey. I am sure that they felt lonely more than once in their ministry. But they held on to Jesus’ promise that He will be there for them until the end.

In Summary

Loneliness is like a caterpillar that slowly eats us up until all that is left is a hole where our heart used to be. Sometimes it is hard to overcome it. Sometimes, we feel like we will never be happy again, that there is no escape from that situation, but there is. God is always giving us a chance to be happy, to start fresh. And most important of all, He is there with us every step of the way.

With the help of our Lord and these Bible verses about loneliness, we can avoid feeling lonely. We can fear no evil, we will be able to stand amid chaos and loneliness because we hold God’s righteous right hand. God is our Father, and He is not happy when we are lonely. God gave us life, and God wants us to live it to the full. No matter what we are feeling, we will never be completely alone because God will never forsake us.

It is not a bad thing to be alone, but sometimes we cannot help but feel lonely. God gave us nature, other people, Bible verses, and His great love to save us from loneliness. The Word of god is powerful and comforting in all the seasons of our lives.
