Hearing The Voice of God: Ways How to Know It

Hearing the voice of God is imperative because it is how He speaks to us so we can understand His will and follow His guidance.

Does God speak to people? Do you want to hear the voice of God? Many people have claimed to have listened to the voice of God. Some say it’s an audible voice, while others say it’s more like a feeling or intuition. No matter how you hear the voice of God, it’s essential to listen to what He has to say. In this blog post, we will discuss scriptures about hearing the voice of God and tips on how you can start listening for His voice in your life!

What Does the Bible Say About Hearing the Voice of God?

In my Christian walk, I often hear people constantly saying, “God told me.” At first, I was confused and wondered how they heard God’s voice. With the Holy Spirit and God’s written Word, I fully understood what it meant.

There are many scriptures about hearing the voice of God. The Bible shows examples of people who heard God speak and obeyed His commands. In Genesis, we read about how God said to Abraham and told him to leave his home country and go to a land He would show him.

His voice has guided His people throughout history, and it can teach you too! God constantly talks to His people. And He talks to them in ways that they can understand, with no confusion or any doubt.

The Bible has shown that it’s not a one-size-fits-all experience. Just as God has spoken to people differently, He will talk to you in a way that makes sense.

Let’s look deeper and understand all the truth about hearing the voice of God.

Hearing The Voice of God

Bible Verses About The Audible Voice of God

Isaiah 30:21

Whether you turn to the right or the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”

In the Old Testament, God often spoke powerfully by making His voice heard. The Lord would talk to His prophets, kings, priests, and other leaders in a way that made them not wonder who was speaking. As you read through the Old Testament, you’ll find what God said in many different ways that could be seen and heard.

Also, no story in the Bible shows that God stopped talking that way. If it’s written down hundreds of times that God spoke to people aloud, it must be accurate and not just a story.

Genesis 1:27-28

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.”

The first time Adam and Eve heard God was through His voice. I think that every Spirit-filled believer can get better at hearing God’s voice if they are open to it. God still speaks in a way that can be heard and seen. Though it may not be every day that we would hear God’s audible voice, we shouldn’t discount it too.

Numbers 12:6-8

“And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the Lord will make myself known unto him in a vision, and speak unto him in a dream. My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all mine house. With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of the Lord shall he behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?”

In these verses, God clarifies how He speaks to us. And this includes talking to His people with a voice we can hear naturally. All of them are ways that God communicates with us, but each one is delivered and expressed in its unique way according to God’s will.

Exodus 19:19

“And as the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him in thunder.”

God’s voice can come through as thunder. To those to whom He intends to speak, it comes as a clear voice. For others, they hear thunder. Yet this is not inclusive. God’s voice can come in any form as He pleases.

Bible Verses About Hearing God Speak

Romans 10:17

“Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.”

Faith is not born out of man’s will. Confidence comes when we hear His voice. And it can be through His Word in the Bible.

Isaiah 30:21

Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”

God’s voice comes with clarity and direction. He shows us where to go and guides us every step of the way in our everyday lives.

John 6:63

The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life.”

The Holy Spirit equips us to recognize God’s voice. It is impossible to hear God’s voice without the help of the Holy Spirit. If we try to listen with our ears, it will be impossible.

Hebrews 3:15

As has just been said: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.”

We have established that God speaks to us in many ways and for many reasons. One of those reasons is lovingly rebuking us when we have done sinful things. We must act and repent.

John 5:30

“By myself, I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.”

Sometimes we have experienced or witnessed someone who has claimed to hear God’s voice only to do what is contrary to what the Bible is saying. As we claim to hear God’s voice, it is essential that we also understand that God will never go against His Word.

Bible Verses About Listening to God

John 8:47

Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”

Hearing is the first step to listening. Hearing is a sound that we hear that we may or may not be interested in. And even hearing requires that we become His people.

James 1:22

Do not merely listen to the Word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”

Listening requires obedience.

Proverbs 4:20–21

My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight; keep them within your heart.”

Listening comes with intentionality and understanding. We need to pay attention and wait in anticipation. When God speaks, we must keep it in our hearts and cherish it.

Matthew 4:4

“Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

Oh, how sweet to the soul the words of our Heavenly Father. When we make that decision to pay attention to His Word, it is life-giving. His Word nourishes our entire being. It is a living Word.

Exodus 15:26

“He said, If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord who heals you.”

Listening to God comes with a life-changing message. When the Lord speaks, it’s always for our good and to prosper us.

How to Know the Voice of God?

Hearing The Voice of God

Through His Word

There are a few ways we can learn to recognize the voice of God. The first way is through God’s Word. Reading the Holy Bible exposes us to His character and nature.

When we hear the Lord speaking, it doesn’t bring confusion but order and peace in our lives. God speaking should not make you question the Bible or doubt the character of our Heavenly Father.

To know His voice, you must first understand who Jesus Christ is, His character, and all the truth about Him.

Through the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is an excellent way for us to hear from God. He will often speak to us through our thoughts and feelings. Additionally, the Holy Spirit can use other people or Christians to speak words of wisdom or knowledge into our lives. When we are seeking after God, the Holy Spirit will guide us to the truth.

There are many ways God speaks to us, and God gave us the Holy Spirit as our helper to build our relationship with Him and assure us that He is constantly speaking.

Through His Creation

Nature has a way of helping us know God’s voice. The beauty of creation can often be a reflection of the creator. Seeing the stars, the sunset, or a baby being born can remind us of God’s power and greatness. Additionally, hearing His voice through nature can help us feel His peace and presence.

We can hear God speaking through the waves on the sea, the peace, and the stillness of the night. We can even listen to Him through the gush of the wind.

Remember that He is always speaking no matter how you choose to hear from God. By taking the time to quiet our minds and hearts, we can begin to recognize His voice more clearly. Don’t be afraid to ask God for guidance in your faith journey! He will never lead you astray.

Remember this. When speaking to toddlers, we do not talk to them like we speak to our friends. We adjust our words and tone depending on their level of understanding.

It is the same way with God. He knows us and understands us. He knows how He can best talk to us so that we can easily recognize that it is Him.

Does a sheep listen? Does a sheep hear? Yes. A sheep will always be able to recognize the voice of its shepherd. You are His sheep. And you will always be able to recognize His voice when you intentionally seek Christ.

How To Hear The Voice of God?

Believe that He is Speaking

The first step in hearing God is to believe that He is speaking. When we believe that God is talking to us, we will be more open to hearing His voice.

Additionally, we need to be patient when waiting for God to speak. His timing is perfect, and He will always speak at the right time. Wait in anticipation and expectation. The Lord Jesus speaking to us is a moment in our lives we will never forget. It is a powerful testimony that can encourage you and others too.

Read and Meditate on His Word

It is essential to spend time in prayer and Bible study. The more time we spend with God, the easier it will be to hear His voice. Our prayer life is an avenue for us to not just listen to Him but to have a conversation with God.

We all need some quiet time in our lives. This means setting aside time each day to spend in prayer and meditation. Additionally, it is crucial to find a place where you can be alone with your thoughts and away from distractions. When we take the time to quiet our minds, we will be able to hear God’s voice more clearly.

When we hear God, we can receive great and hidden things He has prepared for us here and in our eternal life.

Test The Truth

Now that we know that God can speak to us in various ways, it can come from people or even our understanding. It can come as a thought while we do our prayer and meditation.

When we receive a word, praying and verifying it in the Bible is always essential. We need to pray about it and seek His wisdom. Also, we can also seek counsel from our leaders.

We need to test if it was our voice or, indeed, the Lord’s voice. Doing this does not mean we doubt God. Doing this means that we recognize ourselves as humans who can make mistakes. The last thing that we want is to misrepresent Christ.

What’s the Most Important Thing to Do After Hearing the Voice of God?

God tells us things we need to change, sins we need to let go of, plans we need to fix, or people we need to help. We need to be willing and whole-heartedly obey what He says. When we are obedient, we are showing God that we trust Him and His guidance in our lives.

Some are easy to obey, and some are not. We need the help of the Holy Spirit to do what God requires us to do. Our obedience will not only bring blessing but will bring spiritual growth in our walk with Christ.

Aside from obedience, we must be good stewards of God’s presence. Like any relationship, we need to cultivate it and grow in our knowledge and intimacy with Christ.

We seek Christ sincerely and solely above everything else. And when we do this, watch how it is easy for us to hear and recognize His voice.

Hearing The Voice of God

In Summary

A relationship with Jesus is not a close relationship. It is a relationship that grows to greater heights as we seek Him sincerely. Part of that growth is learning how to hear His voice. As we grow closer to Him, we will recognize God’s voice more.

Our journey in our relationship with Christ is different from others. Take your time to get to know Him, who He is, and His immense love for you. Bask in God’s presence as you understand His Word more, His voice, and how He moves in our lives.
