What is Discipleship Prayer?

So, what is discipleship prayer? Discipleship prayer is simply spending time with God in prayer, getting to know Him better, and learning how to follow His ways.

It’s about asking for His help and guidance from the Holy Spirit as we seek to become more like Christ Jesus.

Prayer is a vital part of discipleship, and it should be prioritized in our lives. When we pray, we open up the lines of communication with our Heavenly Father and invite Him into our lives. He can use prayer to speak to us, guide us, and help us grow in our faith.

Importance of Prayer in Discipleship

The importance of prayer in discipleship and our lives cannot be overstated. Prayer is how we stay connected to God and receive His strength through the Holy Spirit to live out our faith as we carry our cross daily. Prayer is also a form of worship.

When we pray, we invite God into our lives and ask for His help. He can use prayer to guide us and give us wisdom as we seek to follow Him. Prayer is also a way for us to express our dependence on God and our need for His strength.

We are called to live holy lives, and prayer is one of the main ways that we can do this. When we pray, we ask God to help us become more like Jesus and to work in our lives and the world around us.

What Does the Bible Say About Discipleship Prayer

The Bible has a lot to say about discipleship and prayer. Here are some key Bible verses on discipleship:

Matthew 28:19-20

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

When Jesus gave the Great Commission, He wasn’t simply giving His followers a list of things to do. He was calling them to a lifestyle of discipleship – one that would be characterized by a radical commitment to following Him and making His name known to all nations.

Luke 11:28

“He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.'”

When we think about discipleship, we often focus on the importance of teaching others about the Bible and evangelism. However, Jesus made it clear that there is more to being a follower of God than simply sharing His Word with others.

It is not enough to just hear the Word of God; we must also be obedient to it. Obedience requires us to put what we have learned into practice in our daily lives. It means living out our faith in the way we treat others, spending our time and resources, and caring for creation.

John 15:16

“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name, the Father will give you.”

When we surrender our lives to Jesus, He promises to guide us and give us everything we need to follow Him. Discipleship is not a solo journey; it’s something we do together with other believers. We encourage and challenge each other, pray for each other, and hold each other accountable. But ultimately, it’s about having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and allowing Him to lead us every day.

Acts 20:28

“Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.”

The verse from Acts 20:28 powerfully reminds us of the weighty responsibility that God has given to those of us who have been called to be disciples. As His followers, we are called to “keep watch over” not only ourselves but also all those who have been entrusted to our care. This is a daunting task, but it is one that we are not alone in.

The Holy Spirit, who dwells within us, is ever present to guide and strengthen us as we fulfill our calling. Let us never take lightly the privilege and responsibility of being disciples of Christ, but let us always cling to Him, who is the Good Shepherd, who laid down His life for His flock.

Conclusion

When we pray for ourselves and others, we ask God to work in our lives and the lives of those around us. As we continue to grow in our faith, let us remember to pray for discipleship—for ourselves and others.
