Bible verses about grief

John 11:35

“Jesus wept.”

God knows what grief is. This is the shortest verse in the Bible, and the word used here does not mean shedding a few tears. Jesus cried His heart out; He bawled. Jesus grieved. Come to Him because He understands.

Ecclesiastes 8:17

“I realized that no one can discover everything God is doing under the sun. Not even the wisest people discover everything, no matter what they claim.”

Not knowing or understanding God’s will can cause us grief. Also, not knowing why certain things are happening in our lives or why we experience loss can make our hearts heavy with grief. But, we must never waiver in our belief that God is doing what is best for His children, no matter what.

Bible verses for dealing with grief

Philippians 4:13

“I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”

God’s strength is beyond comprehension, and He gives us strength. God gives us the energy, will, and courage to get up every morning and face the day.

Psalm 56:8

“You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.”

Grief can sometimes be isolating. We might feel like no one understands or cares, but we must never forget that Someone does. God understands, and He cares. Come to Him and let Him share in the grief.

Bible verses for the unexpected death of a loved one

Revelations 21:4

“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

It is never easy to lose a loved one. It is never easy for us who were left behind. But we have the assurance that they are in a better place now, a place that is much more beautiful than anything we can offer.

When we lose people we love, we experience pain that is impossible to put into words, but we know they do not feel any sadness anymore. With our love, we will learn to let them go, move on, and wait for the day when God will call us home and we will be reunited with our loved ones who have gone before us.

Matthew 5:4

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”

God will never abandon us, especially when we desperately need Him. Call out to God and experience comfort that this world could never give.

Bible verses for comfort in times of grief

1 Peter 5:7

“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”

Loss can cause not just grief but also anxiety and worries. We thought something or someone would be in our future, and then suddenly, they are gone, and the future we were looking forward to is also gone. We might feel lost and unsure of what to do or where to go, but God is always there for us. Let us give Him our worries because He cares for His children most.

Deuteronomy 31:8

“It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”

When we are grieving, every step we take might feel heavy. The good news is that no matter how hard it is to move forward, God is there with us, leading the way and cheering us on.

Psalm 34:18

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

God sees everything, and He sees our broken hearts. He will care for us, help us deal with the pain, and grow.

Bible verses of hope amid grief

John 16:22

“So you have pain now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.”

They say that joy is more profound than happiness and that it is not as fleeting as happiness. Still, we do not feel joy all the time. We feel sorrow and grief as well. But, with God beside us, joy is never truly gone.

Romans 8:18

“I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.”

We might feel sorrow or grief because of our faith. We must persevere and hold on to God because the grief will not last forever. Joy and blessings will take their place.
