5 Important Prayers for Employment

Prayer for employment is a prayer of thanksgiving for a job breakthrough or when going through challenging career and financial periods.

Talking about careers is a loaded topic for most. It can bring about worry, disappointment, frustration, and even depression. Whether you’re shifting careers, trying to land your first job, or trying to endure a job that drains you, employment has its challenges. In the trials of work, praying might not be your go-to. But God is the ultimate source of guidance and provision. He cares for your career and the daily grind of work.

What is a Prayer for Employment?

Prayer for employment is a prayer one can say when dealing with the highs and lows of their career. It can be a prayer of thanksgiving for a job breakthrough. It can also be a prayer of supplication when going through challenging career and financial periods.

Why Say a Prayer for Employment?

God listens and guides

Prayer is a way of communicating with God. When we pray, we do not utter words into the abyss. God is on the other side of our sincere prayers. He listens to our thanksgiving, cries, and petitions. We sometimes think that God is cut-off from our everyday decisions. We think, “The Lord does not care about my job!” But the truth is, He cares and is mindful of the details of our life – including our careers. Including Him in our career progression through a prayer of employment will be beneficial.

You also might be asking, “But how does the Lord guide and provide for me in my career?” Questions like, “How will I know what He’s telling me?” You can find the answers to these questions in the Bible. God extends us guidance through varied leadings. But the primary and inerrant way He speaks to us is through the Bible. When you need guidance for vital career decisions, lift your prayer to God and read your Bible. He listens, and He speaks.

Praying alleviates worries and anxieties

Employment carries with it many worries. You might be stuck in a job you drag yourself to every morning. You might be working in a company that does not care about you. You might have been sending out hundreds of resumes without getting a call. You might have just been terminated. You might feel lost about your career, not knowing what move to take next. And when you have a family to provide for, these worries magnify.

The Lord wants us to seek Him in times of struggle. He wants us to lay our worries at His feet because His care is broad and deep (1 Peter 5:7). When we seek the Lord through prayer, we gain perspective about our fears and worries. We see our anxieties in the light of our salvation. We view them through the lens of eternity. The Lord reminds us that He is our help, strength, and upholder (Isaiah 41:10).

God opens and closes doors of opportunity

Most times, we forget that the Lord is sovereign and all-powerful. Such is especially true when we are overcome with worries and fears. We may feel the need to rely on ourselves alone to create opportunities. Or we may feel the Lord provides except when it comes to job hunting.

But God is the ultimate source of good things and gifts (James 1:17). He also made you for a meaningful purpose. You were not made by chance but by masterful hands. Your work can be a platform by which God will fulfill His purpose for your life. Therefore, He will equip you with the strength, wisdom, knowledge, and perseverance you need. Moreover, He will open opportunities where He can use you for His bigger purposes.

So whatever trial you are experiencing in your career journey, have faith that the Lord is your first and final master, the primary CEO of your life. Nothing can therefore hamper or halt His will for your life.

Bible Verses to Remember When Saying a Prayer for Employment

Colossians 3:22-24

Bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not by way of eye service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.”

Philippians 4:4-7

“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Proverbs 3:5-6

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

John 14:1-4

“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.”

Proverbs 16:3

“Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.”

Lord God,

Thank you for the opportunity to have this job interview. I have waited, and now you present an opportunity before me. As I prepare for my interview, remind me that my best is only possible when my focus is on you. You are the giver of strength and courage. You are the author of this chapter and the maker of success

Provide me the wisdom and knowledge to answer the questions in my job interview. Let me remain calm, so I may not drown in worry and fear. Please put words in my mouth that will speak truth, life, and blessings. Please allow me this work opportunity that I may be able to share in building your kingdom. May I be challenged to grow and hunger for you all the more. Sustain me throughout this interview, Lord. I give you back the glory now and forever. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Loving and gracious Father,

I praise you for giving me another day to be used by you. Thank you that I can work today. Provide me the strength and perseverance to go through the challenges of today’s tasks. Shield me from the worries and fears of the flesh. Bless all the interactions with my supervisors, colleagues, clients, and stakeholders.

Give me the wisdom to make crucial decisions. Remind me that you have planted me in this place for a reason. Allow me to use my talents and my gifts in ways that will glorify you. My excellence is in you. And at the end of the day, allow me the gift of rest when all the work is done. I lift these all in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Prayer for a new job

Almighty Father,

I know you are not finished with your work on me, and better things are yet to come. You know the desires of my heart and my needs fully well. I believe that your will for me is good, pleasing, and perfect. Lord, I pray for a new job – a job that will allow me to honor you and fulfill your purpose over my life. Help me to seek you first and your kingdom above my wants and agenda.

God, would you open doors of opportunities for me? I pray for divine connections with potential employers or companies. Give me wisdom as I write my application letters and go to interviews. Equip me with strength for the days ahead.

And when you bless me with a new opportunity, may I completely rely on you alone. Allow me to be motivated by service and compassion. Cause me not to forget that you brought me to that moment. Help me to put my hope in you in this time of seeking and waiting. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

I ask you to help me align my desires with your great purpose for me.

Please lead me to the place and path you want me to be on. There may be many distractions that pull me away from you. But I ask that you always draw near and pull me close to you. When I feel doubtful, remind me of your promises. Help me trust your beautiful plans for my life. When I struggle with exhaustion, emptiness, and hopelessness, I ask for your grace to be upon me. May all that I do bring glory to your name. All these I pray in the mighty name of your Son Jesus, Amen.
